Behold, I am doing a new thing… Isaiah 43:19
So yeh, I got a haircut! Got the relaxer clipped July 28 and am letting my natural shine through. I.am.loving.it. I’ve “gone natural” twice before, but this time it’s a little bit more representative of my current season. It’s more than a new do just for the sake of a new do.
Now we hear about and read stories all the time on women taking out a new lease on life, who have a new attitude (to borrow the popular Patti LaBelle song title), or who are simply starting over from a recent life change, and so decide to reflect that. All those are great and fine, admirable and inspirational. But my change in style of hair goes a little deeper than that.
As a woman of faith, I strive daily to live by what God orders. I said I strive – I don’t always make the mark, don’t always make choices that are best for me, and frankly, sometimes am a little less than graceful. But that’s another post.
The Word in Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “To everything there is a season…” Sometimes God propels you into a season where you recognize growth has occurred. You’ve let some things go in order to let some things be. You have renewed grace and power that you protect with all your might. Your striving is stronger.
The Word also says, “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” (1 Peter 5:10 ESV) The part that stands out for me is the latter – God will establish you. He will set you in the season to which He has called. It is not some new life attitude you’ve chosen for yourself to showcase. It is God who is at work in you. And you know it. And so you are led to let His light shine from the inside out. To His glory.
A new haircut might say to others, she’s got a new attitude! But it reflects so much more – that you’re God’s chosen, that you’ve embraced His new, that you’re ready and set in your next phase of life. In this season I’ve been blessed with a new position at work, continued physical healing, so many great new social connections, and much more. I’m so excited! (Ok, there’s another song…)
See you back here on New Day on 9/23!
